Tacksy vs a notes app
A notes app is great for writing things down in order. Tacksy is for the things you are not ready to put in order yet. Here is how they differ, and when you should use which.
The short version
Notes apps are built around lists and documents. You open a new note, give it a title, write, and file it in a folder. Tacksy is built around a board. You put a small fragment somewhere, see it next to everything else, and move it as your thinking changes.
Side by side
| A typical notes app | Tacksy | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | A list of notes and folders | A corkboard you arrange by hand |
| Best for | Longer writing, meeting notes, documents | Fragments, ideas, plans you are unsure about |
| Structure | Folders and titles up front | Add structure later, only if an idea earns it |
| Seeing everything | Scroll through a list | See your stickies together on one board |
| Look and feel | Clean and plain | Coloured stickies, pins and a cork board |
| Price | Varies by app | Free |
Where notes apps struggle
Many people keep a folder called "Ideas" in their notes app, and it quietly grows into hundreds of entries nobody opens again. A list hides things: only the top few are visible, and everything else is out of sight. A board keeps your fragments in view, so they are more likely to turn into something.
Where Tacksy fits
- You have a random thought and want to put it somewhere in a few seconds.
- You are planning something, such as content, a project or a trip, and want to see the pieces together.
- You like arranging things visually.
- You want your ideas to be somewhere you enjoy opening.
When a notes app is the better choice
If you are writing a long document, keeping detailed meeting minutes or storing text you will search through later, a notes app or a document editor is the better tool. Tacksy is not trying to replace those. Many people will use both: a notes app for writing, and Tacksy for the loose ideas that come before it.
